The year 2014 is a big one for anniversaries and few of them would compare with the 40th anniversary of Marvel Comics’ Wolverine, who first appeared at the tail end of Incredible Hulk #180 and then had his first full appearance in Incredible Hulk #181 alongside the jade giant and murderous Wendigo.

It’s also an anniversary for the Hero Initiative and The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide. This year marks the fifth consecutive year Gemstone Publishing and Hero have teamed up to raise money for comic creators in need.

Harkening back to the character’s earliest appearances, Wolverine is featured with the Hulk and Wendigo on the cover for The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide #44 Hero Initiative Edition. This exclusive, 500-copy, limited hardcover edition will go on sale at Comic-Con International: San Diego on Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at the Hero Initiative booth.

Returning even further to Wolverine’s roots, the cover is illustrated by his co-creator Herb Trimpe, who teamed with a pair of superstars, inker Tom Palmer and colorist Laura Martin, for the piece. Gemstone Publishing’s Creative Director, Mark Huesman, designed the logo and trade dress.

The Hero Initiative edition will be available exclusively from Hero with all money raised going to the 501 (c)(3) charity. An extremely limited number of copies will be available from Hero’s website and through a select group of participating retailers. There will be no softcover edition of this version, and it will retail for $35.

When I first saw it, I was immediately taken back to Herb’s great run on Incredible Hulk, only with today’s better production values. It’s almost like looking at the greatest Marvel Treasury Edition never produced. We’re very happy to have it on the cover of the Guide,” said Steve Geppi, President and CEO of Gemstone Publishing.

“It’s hard to believe that we’ve already reached five years of offering the special Hero Initiative editions of The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide, but on the other hand Steve Geppi, Bob Overstreet, and their team at Gemstone Publishing have clearly delivered once again,” said Hero President Jim McLauchlin. “With the great line-up of creators we’ve had, it’s really become a tradition and an important fundraising tool for us. This time, Herb, Tom and Laura knocked it out of the park too.”

This marks the fifth consecutive year that Gemstone and Hero have worked together to create a special limited fundraiser edition of the Guide. For The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide #40, John Romita, Jr., Klaus Janson and Dean White provided a 40th anniversary recreation of Conan The Barbarian #1. For The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide #41, John Romita, Sr., Tom Palmer and Dean White presented a selection of top Marvel heroes. For The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide #42, writer-artist Matt Wagner teamed his Grendel with DC Comics’ Batman, colored by Ryan Brown. For The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide #43, Terry Moore and Brian Miller illustrated Francine and Katchoo from Moore’s Strangers in Paradise. As is the case with this new edition, all funds from the sales of these volumes went to The Hero Initiative.

The standard editions of The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide #44 feature a dynamic take on Batman for his 75th anniversary by superstar artist J.G. Jones and a vibrant depiction of Vampirella for the character’s 45th anniversary by Danger Girl creator J. Scott Campbell with colorist Nei Ruffino.
