It was 2003 and Batman fans thought they’d never see their favorite hero on the screen again. We pretty much only had the animated series to help us forget what filmmaker Joel Schumacher did to the Dark Knight.
Then that summer at San Diego Comic Con the fan film Batman: Dead End was shown. Fans at Comic Con went nuts. And then it hit the internet and it was awesome. Finally, a filmmaker who understood Batman. It just wasn’t Batman versus the Joker, it was Batman vs a Predator. It was totally unbelievable. Most of us thought the director should be tapped to direct the next Batman film, but it never happened.
Behind The Mask – The Batman: Dead End Story is a documentary about the filmmaker Sandy Collora. I really enjoy this the film. I think part of it is I’m a Batman fan and the other part is I studied film in college. Collora is brutally honest and I truly appreciated it. I found it so interesting the entire process behind the short.
The only issue I had with the film is it just jumped from Batman: Dead End to his feature film Hunter Prey. They didn’t talk about Collora’s other film World’s Finest.
All in all, I truly enjoy watching this. I liked director’s Eric Dow look on this documentary. People being interviewed weren’t just talking heads. They were filmed at angles that really made it appealing to watch.
I recommend this documentary to any Batman or filmmaking fans out there.
