Rob Williams and Guillem March wrap up their Only Human arc in the pages of Action Comics issue 986.

The Machinist has made his return in the prior issue and has managed to manipulate and take control of Lex Luthor. Unable to resist the mind control, Luthor and Superman duel. Can Lex Luthor break free from the Machinist’s control? Can Superman stop Machinist’s global civil war plan? Or will Lex Luthor and Superman learn the dangers of human nature and never see the light?

While Dan Jurgens wasn’t on this arc, Rob Williams has managed to do an entertaining job at constructing a plot that made use of the Machinist again. For those who don’t remember, Machinist is a villain that once outed Superman’s secret identity during the New 52/ DC You imprint. The pacing of the plot and action are paced pretty well, and the action is tightly knit, never spiralling beyond the plot. The most interesting thing about the issue prior and the current issue is the glimpse of Lex Luthor’s return to possible villainy. Even in his mind controlled state, it’s still fascinating to see Lex Luthor’s drive to save humanity despite doing cruel things to accomplish that. There are some pretty cool things that happen in the final pages of the issue that allude to the more bigger things happening to the Doomsday Clock if you catch my drift, which will have readers and bloggers everywhere talking.

The artwork by Guillem March is nothing short of superb. His artwork is action packed and full of power. His choreography of Superman and Lex Luthor’s battle pops out of the pages in the same spirit as a well choreographed anime.

This was a nice , fun two part arc that foreshadows what is to come ahead in regards to the identity of Mr Oz, and the possible future of Superman, Lex and DC as a whole.
