The Defenders picks up months after Iron Fist. Danny Rand, AKA Iron Fist, and Colleen Wing are tracking down the Hand with their latest lead in Cambodia. Their lead ends up getting killed by a mysterious assassin, but before he dies, he tells the pair they need to return to New York. Meanwhile, Luke Cage has finished serving his time at Seagate prison. His time was shortened thanks to lawyer Foggy Nelson. With that, Luke heads back to Harlem to reunite with Claire Temple. Matt Murdock has given up his life as Daredevil, but it’s not easy for Matt. He keeps trying to throw himself into his work. And finally, Jessica Jones is just still drinking. Still living dealing with rape survivor.
We are introduced to Alexandra who is the leader of the Hand. Alexandra is dying and decides to move up the Hands plans. Through separate events, the brings it to the attention of our heroes. Reluctant at to work together, will they be able to come together and defend New York?
Netflix sent over the 1st 4 episodes and I really enjoyed them. As always, everyone is on point here. In the first 4 episodes, you really start to see the heroes to become a team. I especially like the growing friendship between Danny and Luke. In the comics, they are best friends, so this I love. You see some serious Catholic guilt with Matt. He so wants to put on the costume again, but he sees himself a failure and can’t bring himself to do it.
The biggest problem I have with the show is once again Jessica Jones. They still haven’t defined her power levels at all. One moment she’s lifting a car, next she getting her butt kicked. This seriously bugs me. But then I wasn’t a fan of her show at all.
There is a huge improvement in the fight sequences with Iron Fist. I know this was one of the biggest complaints of Iron Fist show, so I’m glad this was fixed.
The pacing is great. They do a great job from transitioning from one story to another as they bring all the characters together. It’s all been leading up to this and they do a great job getting there.
I really have to give props to Sigourney Weaver. She’s like the first lady of action films and she hasn’t slowed down at all. So far they’ve only had action scene with her and she just rocked it!
The Defenders is so worth the wait. All the waiting was so worth it.
Marvel’s The Defenders premieres on August 18, only on Netflix.
