The series takes place shortly after season 2 of Daredevil. Frank Castle, AKA the Punisher, is tracking the last men that were responsible for the death of his wife and kids. Frank’s finishes his mission and tries to return to a normal existence.
Frank takes a construction job knocking down walls with just a sledgehammer. He’s still haunted by the death of his family and in a way, this job is somewhat cathartic. It’s isn’t long before Frank is dragged back into the world he left behind, by an ex-NSA analyst David Lieberman who goes by the name of by the name of Micro. Frank reluctantly joins Micro and the Punisher is reborn.
I only got a chance to view the first 6 episodes and so far it’s interesting. Jon Bernthal does a good job channeling the Punisher again. You can really see that rage just under the surface.
Micro is played by Ebon Moss-Bachrach. The Micro in this series is very Edward Snowden-ish. Frank and Micro do not get along well at all, but they tolerate each other to get the job done.
This series is definitely off to a good start, but it’s not without its issues. Within the first 10 minutes of the series, Frank burns the skull vest we saw him put on at the end of the second series of Daredevil. I sat through the six episodes wondering when Frank would be donning the skull logo again. This is truly frustrating. I’m not asking for a full costume, but this is a shown called the Punisher. I don’t want to wait until the final episode for him to wear it again. It was irritating in the second season of Daredevil and it’s irritating now.
The other problem is there’s a subplot with an ex-soldier named Lewis Walcott. He’s dealing with PTSD. Currently, I don’t see how his story interacts with Frank’s. Jessica Jones had similar problems with too many subplots from supporting characters that never went anywhere. So I’m afraid this might be the case with the Punisher.
As a whole, the series is very dark and very violent. Sometimes a little overkill but not a major complaint.
With only 7 episodes left, I truly hope that things improve.
