Scarlet, the new Jinxworld title from DC, returns for her second issue.

Scarlet is another title from Brian Michael Bendis’s new DC imprint, Jinxworld. Bendis is the co-creator and writer, along with co-creator Alex Maleev on illustration and colour. It’s a strongly rendered look at the dystopian future, even more strongly realistic due to the model named “Iva”, credited as being the source for drawings of Scarlet.

The scene is a daunting one: Portland Oregon has been the scene of a violent uprising from a group of citizens. And Scarlet is at the middle of things. There are drones and cameras everywhere. The eye in the sky…
The situation in issue 2 is this: a negotiator has arrived on the scene. He has a phone that he says will connect Scarlet to the White House. So, what are her demands? This dilemma starts a series of conversations and memories begin to cascade along…

The book reads verrrry quickly, and not much is resolved by the time we say goodbye to the issue. Perhaps not enough for the cost of the book, unfortunately. Everything is primed, but there is a feeling that things are lagging. It’s time to drop some accelerant on the narrative: time to git goin’.

Let’s hope for some progress and increased physical drama in issue 3!

DC, Jinxworld, Scarlet #2, $3.99 for approx 30 pages of content. Mature rating.

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
