From DC Comics, and only available from US Walmart stores, comes Superman #3, the 100 page Comic Giant!

It has an explosive front cover by Andy Kubert and one new story inside.

Without going into detail about the marketing strategy behind the Walmart special issues of select DC titles, let’s just acknowledge that these 100-page Giant issues are intended to offer something new to direct market fans, and also serve as a jumping on point for casual readers. So, there is a new chapter of Superman to start off the issue, followed by 3 reprinted stories that will introduce the new reader to more. Each story ends with the promise of something to follow, and the reprints have brief intros to orient the reader. All good.

The story? Superman and Batman have a problem; a family has been attacked, and a little girl has been kidnapped. Even though the scale of this problem is minuscule to Superman, it’s getting under his skin.

This new story, written by Tom King, and illustrated by Andy Kubert (pencils), Sandra Hope (inks) and Brad Anderson (color), reads like a King story. But one gets the sense that it’s a little LESS King than usual. That is, it is simplified a little bit here and there. It’s not as ‘stream of consciousness’ as say, Mister Miracle. King-lite.

There is an irregular rhythm to the pacing due to the pattern of; splash page, many paneled page, splash page, many panels, etc. It takes a bit of getting used to. But before you know it, it’s done until next month, when the creative team will bring you another new short (12 pages) chapter of Superman!

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
