Iron Fist returns to Netflix for a second season, and it’s back with a lot of improvements.

Out of all the Marvel shows on Netflix, Iron Fist was seen as one of the weakest. Not a lot of people liked the show at all. The plot was confusing and dragged. The fight sequences left something to be desired. The question if Iron Fist would get a second season was up in the air. Thankfully because of improvements to the character in the Defenders, the Iron Fist is getting a second shot on Netflix. Albeit, for a shorter season. 10 episodes instead of the standard 13.
We pick up with Danny Rand and Colleen Wing living in Chinatown. Danny is still honoring Matt’s wishes by being the city’s protector. And while Danny is technically rich, he works a day job as a mover. He feels it humbles him. He lets Ward Meachum handle the day to day activities of Rand Enterprises. Colleen works at a community center. The two of them seem happy together, but the past always has a way of catching up. Davos, Danny’s friend/rival from K’un-Lun, still feels Danny is not worthy of the mantle of the Iron Fist. Davos truly feel he is the worthy one and teams up with Joy Meachum for the power of the Iron Fist. Joy is motivated by her own reason for revenge against Danny and her brother Ward. To do this, they use the services of a woman named Mary Walker, who is much more than she appears. Once Davos has the power of the Iron Fist does this mean an end for Danny Rand?
I’m going to admit, while I did feel season 1 of Iron Fist dragged, I didn’t think it was all that bad. But season 2 is a huge improvement. Danny is a lot more fleshed out this time around and actor Finn Jones does a great job. In some of the comics, even though Iron Fist was rich, it’s not like he went around like Tony Stark. He considered himself a man of the people. So to see him work a regular blue collar job makes a lot of sense.
One of the biggest improvements is fight sequences. There were numerous reports from season 1 about how rushed training was for Finn and how quickly they tried to shoot it all. You can see this time around that they took more time and it does look more believable and more fluid. Not as many close-ups to hide the action. Wide shots so you can see everything. And it looks great!
Simone Missick also joins the cast, reprising her role from Luke Cage, Misty Knight. We got a taste of it in Luke Cage, but when Missick and Jessica Henwick, who plays Colleen, team up, it seriously makes me want Netflix to make a Daughters of the Dragon series. Missick and Henwick play off of each other really well. I just want more!
Actress Alice Eve is new to the cast as Mary Walker. For you comic fans, that’s Typhoid Mary. She’s been made more street level in this series, but the changes actually work. Alice does a good job as Mary. Playing this character can be challenging and she pulls it off.
This season of Iron Fist is about family and how family is not just by blood. Danny sees Davos as his brother. Joy sees Danny as a brother. Then you have real family like Joy and Ward. The entire season just seems to be about family.
We finally get to see Danny in the Iron Fist mask, and honestly, it doesn’t work. It’s used for a ceremony here. Honestly, I’ve seen cosplayers do a better job on the mask, so this makes me wonder if it was done on purpose. While great to see it, the show-runners could have done a better job on the mask.
The bottom line, a huge improvement here. Story, action, acting. Everything has been improved upon. It’s a must watch even though it’s a shorter season. Maybe this will make season 3 longer.

Great – will give season 2 a try! I liked certain aspects of Season 1, but I didn’t think the acting for the character of Danny was up to par with some of the other Marvel heroes. Really excited to hear that Misty Knight will be joining the show – I really liked her character on Luke Cage Season 1.
