Ruby Falls, the four-issue miniseries from Dark Horse, wraps up with issue 4 this month.

Writer Ann Nocenti weaves the broken strands of memory and mystery together in this former mining town. On the surface, it’s about a woman or two trying to solve an old murder. But deep in the caves of the subconscious, more themes and tentacles emerge.

Burial, memory, buried memories. Survival of the genders, the blurring of the lines, the role reversals and the redemptions.

Flavia Biondi illustrates with a sure, sensitive hand, and Lee Loughridge has a way with colour that is wayyy above average. The characters and settings are remarkable here. The town has a flavour and a ruby rich hue of its own, and this is a special title.

I highly recommend this mini-series for those who need a bit more symbolism and thoughtful significance in their comic reading.

Bonus character sketches are included in this concluding issue.

Dark Horse, Ruby Falls #4, $3.99 for 27 pages of story content. Mature readers.

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
