After leading a successful rescue operation U.S. Marine Ray Garrison and his wife go on vacation. While they are on vacation they are kidnapped by mercenaries who want to know the source of the operation. Because Ray is not privy to this, the mercenaries kill him and his wife. Ray is later resurrected by Risingcenaries Spirit Tech, a company that specializes in developing cybernetic enhancements for disabled US military personnel. Ray finds out he’s the first successful candidate that they have resurrected with nanotechnology. If Ray is cut or shot, the nanites repair the damage quickly. Ray then seeks revenge on who killed his wife, but he gets the nagging feeling he’s done this before. Can Ray figure out if he’s in the right head before it’s too late?

The character of Bloodshot was created for Valiant Comic in 1992, by Kevin VanHook, Don Perlin, and Bob Layton. The comic and character were quite popular at the time. But eventually, Valiant Comics folded. It was resurrected twice more and currently is publishing a new Bloodshot comic. I personally never got into the original Valiant comics, but really enjoying the current wave, with Bloodshot as one of my favorite titles

That being said I was really looking forward to this movie when I first heard about it. I also understand that most comic books movies are mainly adaptations and changes do need to be made to appeal to a wider audience. I went into this film with high expectations, and unfortunately, they were all dashed.

The main problem with Bloodshot was the plot. It was really all over the place and just a mess. The pacing was good and the action was good, but that plot was a total mess. The villain’s motivation really seemed just petty. It started off strong, but halfway the second act is where it fell apart, and I just didn’t care.

I can’t blame Vin Diesel. He honestly tried his best with the script he was given. I felt his portrayal had some of the aspects of the character from the comics, but missing so much more. One of the biggest ones was actually calling the character by the name Bloodshot.

Bottom line, I really wanted to walk away from this movie feeling hopeful and seeing the entire Valiant Comic universe being set up for films, but that is not the case. I just can’t recommend this film. Sorry.

Many thanks to Sony Home Entertainment for letting me checking it out.

Bloodshot is currently out on Digital, and on 4K Ultra HD™, Blu-ray™ and DVD 5/5.
