Society of Illustrators presents the first ever exhibit of original Spider-Man artwork.

This weekend I got to check some great Spider-Man artwork over at the Society of Illustrators. Now if you’re not familiar with the Society of Illustrators, they help promote illustration throughout history as an art form. Under that umbrella falls comic arts, so some of the exhibits are comic book artists.

The Art of Spider-Man exhibit is on loan from Spider-Man and John Romita Sr expert Mike Burkey. Most of the artwork covers Romita Sr art, but there’s some Steve Ditko, Gil Kane, and John Romita Jr as well.

This was a very impressive exhibit. There was one section that was from “The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man” that appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #248. It was written by Roger Stern and drawn by John Romita Jr. They had the original script, the rough artwork, and the inked artwork. It really gave a great idea on how the entire process works.

On some of the artwork there had QR codes that told a story about it. You’ll need to download the LizenUp app for you phone to listen.

One of my favorites was a piece that Peanuts creator Charles Schultz collaborated with Romita Sr to have the Peanuts meet Spider-Man. It was funny.

If you’re a comic fan, a Spider-Man fan, or just someone who appreciates great artwork, this exhibit is a must see.

The Art of Spider-Man is going on now to August 26 at the Society of Illustrators. Don’t miss it!

An avid comic collector/reader for over 50 years and self-proclaimed professor of comicology, Brian originally started up the site Pendragon's Post to share his voice. Well, that voice has been shared and evolved into The Fanboy Factor. Brian is an advocate for remembering comic roots, and that we don't forget what was created in the past, and encourage everyone to read it as well. When not swimming in geek culture, he can be seen corrupting..introducing his young son to comics, much to his wife's chagrin.

  1. Thank you for posting this thorough report on the SOI show! I’m unable to get to NYC to see it – now I feel like I have. Really appreciate it! Cheers.
