Uglydoll started off as a line of plush dolls created by David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim. It soon invaded the specialty market and took off in 2001. Finally, there is a movie based on this property.

The movie opens in a toy factory. The rejects on the assembly line get sent to a place called Uglyville. This is a place where being different is celebrated. But Moxy, a pink Uglydoll, dreams of something more. She wants to make a child happy. So with her friends Lucky Bat, Babo, Wage, and Uglydog, they set out on finding a way to find a child. Along the way, they come across the town of Perfection, where dolls learn how to be perfect before they go into the world. In Perfection, Moxy and her friends and subjected to the manipulation of Lou, the leader. Now Moxy must prove to Lou and herself, that it’s what’s on the inside is more important than what’s on the outside.

I have to admit this movie is cute. It definitely falls more in the musical category than say animated. While the songs really aren’t what I normally listen too, they are cute and kind of catchy. More pop music than anything else. It does work for this film.

The voice casting is great. Kelly Clarkson plays the main character of Moxy. Kelly’s background is more of a singer but she really does bring some great life to her character. Nick Jonas is just perfect as Lou. Nick has done acting in the past and does an incredible job of playing the antagonist of the film. I really enjoyed his character.

The rest of the voice cast is really good as well. The only one I had an issue with was Pitbull. He’s a rapper, not an actor, and quite honestly I feel it shows. His character of Uglydog could have been played by anyone else.

The pacing of the film is a steady pace. It really moves nicely. Seeing how the target audience is kids, this is just great for them. Nothing scary at all, but a lot of excitement.

This film is exciting and has heart with the unlining message that it’s our imperfections that make us so perfect.
