A new tale from an old title, The Old Guard: Force Multiplied #1 is from Image.

Yes, there WAS a storyline from The Old Guard. So then, this is the New Old Guard, I guess. No matter. It’s good.

Written by Greg Rucka, with art and covers by Leandro Fernández and colours by Daniela Wiwa, The Old Guard is about a small bunch of people who live a lonnnnng time. In Andy’s case, thousands of years. But they don’t age, so it’s not a case of bony, tired people dragging themselves around, century after century. Nossir. Andy and the gang of Old Guard are nimble, Jack. But they’re slowing down a hair.

There are flashbacks to their previous adventures and hair-raising escapades, to give us some back story. But essentially, today’s lesson comes from the book of People Trying To Do Good. To redeem themselves, to rid the world of human traffickers. To go to Provence in France. To try to make sense of a violent, seemingly never-ending existence. Fight the good fight, and master the ever-changing technology.

Of course, this comic issue itself DOES end, and then we reflect. The story rocked, the concept is solid. The characters have dimension. The drawings and vivid colouring do the trick too; it ain’t easy to illustrate a young woman riding bareback into a battle of thousands of people.

Check this out; or better yet, do what the author did: look to the past: in this case, go back to the previous miniseries of The Old Guard to get your bearings. Then check out Force Multiplied. This issue and the next!

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
