The Black Widow finally gets her due.
It’s been a long time coming but the Black Widow film is finally here. It seems like it took forever for this film to come out. From development to the actual release date. While the COVID outbreak didn’t help, and Disney dragging their feet with releasing it on Disney+, but it was well worth the wait.
This film takes place shortly after Captain America: Civil War. Black Widow, while on the run from the US Government, her past catches up with her and now she has to confront it.
I have to admit this film definitely has shades of James Bond. It’s definitely a blueprint for the film. Director Cate Shortland does a great job putting all the pieces together. The pacing is good and there are enough beats for drama and humor.
The screenplay by Eric Pearson flushes a lot of Black Widow’s backstory, but more important is this film is one about family, and how that family isn’t always one you’re born into.
Scarlett Johansson reprises her role as Black Widow for one final time. As usual, she knocks it out of the park. Her familiarity with the character just really boosts this character even more. It’s bittersweet that this most likely is the last time she’ll be doing this role.
Florence Pugh plays Yelena Belova, another member of the same training program as the Black Widow. Pugh does an excellent job here. Her Russian accent is flawless and her action sequences are extremely impressive.
Rounding out the cast is Rachel Weisz as Melina, a mother figure to the girls. Ray Winstone as Dreykov, head of the Black Widow program and the main antagonist of the film. And finally David Harbour as Red Guardian, a Russian super-soldier. Harbour is seriously the comic relief of the film and he knocks it out of the park!
Overall this is a fun film that gives some great insight into Black Widow’s origin.
The only complaint I have, and it’s because I’m a comic book fan, is Black Widow creators, Stan Lee, Don Rico, and Don Heck only get a “Special Thanks”. I’m sorry but they created this character and should get a “Created By” credit. It truly upset me when the studios and comic publishers pull nonsense like this. This isn’t right at all, and something needs to be fixed about this. Creators should be due their credit.
That being said, bottom line, I truly enjoyed this film and it’s a must-see, not just for a Marvel fan, just for anyone who likes a great spy thriller or just like seeing the ladies kick some serious butt!
Black Widow opens worldwide on July 9 in theaters and Disney+ with Premier Access.
