On Saturday, October 31, 1992, the much beloved X-Men comic book characters leaped onto the small screen with the X-Men animated series. Initially loosely based on Chris Claremont and Jim Lee’s comic arc, it ran for 5 seasons, incorporating other stories from the X-Men comics.
Now Marvel Animation is trying to capture that feeling, with X-Men ’97. A continuation of the original series. Taking place after the final episode. The main plot being the X-Men trying to move forward after the death of Professor X.
But this is as God-awful as the original cartoon!
Everything about the original X-Men cartoon was horrible. The writing. The animation. The voiceovers. Seriously a piece of crap. I never understood what people saw in this show, but on September 20, 1997, the pain finally ended. Praise the lord for small miracles.
Now, for some stupid reason, Marvel Studios’ big man in charge, Kevin Feige, thinks that reviving this stupid cartoon as a continuation in X-Man ’97 is a good idea.
Wow! Feige, you just continue to bring Marvel further down the crapper.
I got the chance to watch the first 3 episodes of X-Men ’97, and I wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy.
Trying to capture the same look, feeling, writing, and characters as that crappy cartoon from 97. Congratulations. You succeeded if you’re going for more of the same drivel.
Funny, I remember another cartoon from the Distinguished Competition that actually was far superior back in the 90s. Just I wish I could remember what it was.
The voice acting is just so bad. Most of it is monotone with over-emphasized accents. And the script the actors are forced to read does not help at all. The script is so cliché and over the top. Trying to get that 90’s feeling. Seriously, did anyone who worked on this show ever actually read the comic? I’m not talking in terms of a straight adaptation, just seeing how the characters actually talk. Just more of the same garbage.
Writing is definitely trying to go for something long-term, but with those first 3 episodes set up 6 different story arcs. Personally, it felt like they were rushing a lot and trying to fit too much in there.
This entire thing is a waste of money.
I will admit one thing, there is a little more adult tone like Wolverine saying crap. But that’s about as adult as this gets,
Hey Feige, if you want to introduce the X-Men, do something live-action. Or, even better, look at the two superior animated series. X-Men shows X-Men Evolution followed by Wolverine and the X-Men. That’s how you do the X-Men. Not this rubbish. Both those cartoons had better writing, animation, and acting. If you’re going to do an X-Men cartoon, you are better off starting fresh. This also opens it to a larger audience, that are not familiar with the characters.
I know I’m going to get trolled for slamming people’s precious cartoon, but I’m sorry, bad TV is bad TV.
Of course, by the time you are actually watching this, the show is already showing on Disney Plus, because God forbid the embargo date is before the show airs and not the exact same time as the premier.
Nostalgia is a big thing these days, and as much as I hate to admit it, those who grew up thinking the X-Men cartoon was actually good, will enjoy this. But like I said, this is just garbage.
“X-MEN ‘97” debuts with the first two episodes on Wednesday, March 20th, exclusively on Disney+
