Kingsway west is a little bit of a mash-up of genres with Cowboys and Indians replaced by Chinese and Mexicans.
I have looked forward to reading this comic since I heard about it and saw a few sneak peeks and it has not been a disappointment. The basic recap is that old school yellow gold is now old news after the discovery of red, that’s right RED gold which led to a MASSIVE war between the Chinese and the Mexicans for control of it. After the war a Chinese soldier by the name of Kingsway law meets a Mexican woman called Sonia, they all in love, get married and settle down. Obviously, that can’t last. Enter Ah Toy on the run looking for Kingsway and leads the Chinese straight to his home where Sonia goes missing after a fire.
Issue 2 begins with a flashback of Kingsway and Sonia’s life together showing it to be settled and happy regardless of the horrors they committed during the war.Kingsway has promised to be good and even though Sonia is missing he still tries to uphold his promise and apologizes to her when inevitably he has to break it!
Turns out Kingsway is extremely good at killing, like insanely good especially if someone gets in the way of him finding his wife! Ah, Toy has a dragon (yup a dragon) which will lead them to her like a flying sniffer dog although Kingsway may not like what he finds.
Back to the red gold, what a powerful element! So far it has helped Ah Toy in battle created wings for a tracker/bounty hunter and can bring the dead back to life for interrogation. No wonder it’s sought after.
I’m liking the mash-up of magic and the old West that this comic brings mixing the harshness of the wild west with the mystical elegance of the orient
