I’ve been anticipating this series ever since it was showcased in “ the World’s Smallest”  arc in Superman. To top that all off, to see Jorge Jimenez illustrating these characters again after his stint on one of his most exemplary work (and of last years beautiful one-shot issues) Superman #7. It was only a matter of time, and it is surely worth the wait now that the series has finally arrived.

Jonathan Kent goes about his regular school activities attending his classes as any eleven years old should. But just when he thinks he has it all figured put, Damian aka Robin approaches him for a specific kind of mission that only they can investigate and accomplish… or at least try to accomplish. What is it that caught Damian and Superboy’s attention? What will they find in this mission? And will they complete it before their nightly curfew?

Man! I gotta state, this issue was all kinds of joy and fun. Peter J Tomassi has had prior experience writing Batman and Robin (2011-2014) and his current run on Superman with Patrick Gleason and company has been nothing short of Superb. With this new series focusing on the super sons, the dynamic is kinetic and full of energy! Their chemistry is humorous and amazingly distinct in comparison to Batman /Superman, and Tim Drake / Connor Kent (Pre 52). There are a lot of things in this book that is literally well written, and great moments both grand and small, especially at the end of this issue when a certain Armored Hero protecting metropolis arrives on the scene. Damian is precise, concise, stubborn, hilarious, and cocky as usual, and Jon is endearing, humble, and fun loving, which provides good contrast between these two as the world’s smallest duo that’ll make crime think twice before taking them on. In many ways, this is a great follow up to what had come before with Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuiness’s old Superman/Batman series from the early 2000’s. There are elements in there that really feel like a perfect successor to that series and then some.

Jorge Jimenez art does exactly what it does best, visually stunning!! There are a lot of well-drawn panels and pages, such as one of the pages where Clark, Lois, and Jon are playing UNO and having a talk about being a hero regardless without need of having an ‘S’ or a ‘Bat’ on his chest. There are some.cool scenes and an homage to the Lightning image from Frank Miller’s Dark Knight Returns. The designs of each if the characters and unique distinctions between the characters and designs are all diligently handled by Jimenez with ease. I’m happy to see him on an ongoing series and hope to see him and Tomassi stay on this series till it ends. Alejandro Sanchez’s colors blend spectacularly well with Jimenez’s pencils/inks making everything look visually vibrant.  Rob Leigh pulls in with his lettering duties and handles it well in this series, never clashing with the art work, but staying in sync with it. This is definitely a must buy and meets expectations, with promise for more to come ahead.
