It’s summer, it’s time for the beach. Bring along your new comic! Bring along DC’s Beach Blanket Bad Guys Summer Special!

First up: The Joker and Bizarro in ‘Worst Finest’. Lee Bermejo (writer) and Francesco Mattina (art) bring us a super gritty, foul languaged mind-twister of a story featuring Joker as Batman, Bizarro as Superman, and God-knows-who as Robin. This is a grim, Stephen-King-like tale of horror at the beach. Not for the faint of heart.

To follow are tales of Lex Luthor, Mr. Freeze, The Cheetah, Black Manta, Giganta, Gorilla Grodd. Deathstroke and the young Penguin. The issue ends with a story of The Crime Syndicate.

There are more writers and artists here than you can shake a stick at; each story runs about 8 pages, and the themes are typically concerned with how a villain gets a wake-up call. Perhaps it’s a little kid who tugs at their heartstrings. Or an unexpected brush with mortality. Or they meet their idol and it’s not so fantastic. Perhaps they spare someone’s life for a change. That sort of thing. Ten stories in all in this 80 Page Giant.

One or two stories actually DO occur at the beach, but this is not Gidget Doing the Watusi At The Beach; this is dark. Dark tales of icy villains, chilling their bones while they plot and scheme. Ah, those summer days!!!

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
