“The Deadly Sting of Nemesis”, (The Grudge Part 2) in Wonder Woman #65 from DC Comics, starts with a powerful cover by Xermanico. (Variant cover by ArtGerm “Stanley Lau”). From there, though, things get misty and not so well defined. Nor compelling, sorry.

Wonder Woman is in the midst of a legal battle; she is being sued for damages recently incurred. And Steve, her boyfriend, is still recovering. He’s hanging around Diana Prince’s princely home in Northern Virginia, with Aphrodite, (AKA: Venus, Goddess of Love, Beauty and Fertility) who is wandering around him in a skimpy purple two-piece swimsuit. Am I the only person who wonders what’s with that?? Steve, alone with Aphrodite for weeks on end?? Okay, okay.

Anyway, Wonder Woman drops in from the sky, sticks around for like, maybe five minutes, then flies away again, telling them she’s not sure when she’ll be back. Don’t order pizza, not sure when I’ll be home, that sort of thing. So, it’s back to Steve, who to me looks like he has fully recovered from near-fatal wounds, and Aphrodite, all sparkling long luscious hair and bikini. Maybe time for a beer on the deck! I’m like, hey, whatever, literally, like.

The rest of the story is certainly strong enough to warrant reading the issue, despite my misgivings about the Goddess of Fertility hanging around the boyfriend… there are some strong dramatic moments, some closure and reconciliations. Those moments are deftly handled. powerful and moving. Those are the moments we want to see more of!

Writer is G. Willow Wilson, art by Jesus Merino and Andy Owens with Romulo Fajardo Jr on colours.

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
