Valiant’s Psi-Lords launches its first issue this week. Written by Fred Van Lente, and illustrated by Renato Guedes, it’s the “origin of the species”.

It’s also a bit of an ‘a-b-c’ story this time around. Four astronauts awake in an other-worldly prison with no memory of how they got there. Time to escape! Slowly, the scene is set. Now, each one of the astronauts has superpowers! We ‘meet’ each astronaut, and understand their new powers. But wait, there are bad guys to fight!

It’s all a bit predictable but nicely configured and rendered by Guedes, with highly detailed figures likely from model references. The colouring is atmospheric, murky and complex. And now, we’re all set for what will happen in issue 2!

Valiant Psi-Lords #1, $3.99 for 21 pages of content. Not rated, assume Teen

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
