As this title winds up its arc, Gunning For Hits issue 6, from Image, gives us the goods.
This tale of 80’s rock and roll record making, with its thinly veiled references to David Bowie, has been both instructive and destructive. We learn so much, even in this fictional wrapper, about record making and record wrecking. Wheeling and dealing, applying leverage and greasing the palms that rotate the dollars. Self-destructive behavior at its most compelling!
Jeff Rougvie winds up his current storyline, that of conflicting agendas between the ‘impossible to manage’ aged rock star and the up and coming new talent that he is manipulating. It’s a twist on A Star Is Born, perhaps, but even more twisted, (“again, like we did last summer”), with more violence, guns, and craziness.
The art by Moritat retains its fun, dramatic and exaggerated enthusiasm. It’s lots of small panels with lots of mayhem. Casey Silver contributes colours, letters, and design. I’ve enjoyed this run and recommend it! Catch the trade in July!
