BOOM! Studios brings us a new title, Wynd #1, from a familiar team!

Written by James Tynion IV (DC’s Batman, Justice League Dark, Wonder Woman, etc) and illustrated by Michael Dialynas (The Woods, Gotham Academy, TMNT, etc) and lettered by Aditya Bidikar (Days of Hate, Adventure Time, 18 Days, etc), we have a top team on board!

In Book One, The Flight of the Prince, young Wynd’s bad demon dream is interrupted by his sister Oakley, who wakes him up to go to work. But all is not well for Wynd; his job in the short order kitchen exposes him to possible danger. You see, Wynd has a secret; he’s a ‘weirdblood’, and weirdbloods are hunted down!

Dialynas contributes good visuals. The line art is cartoony and appropriate for the tone of the story. The colouring is a bit more muted than I would prefer, largely resting on a lot of greyed and faded tones. Bidikar’s lettering is easy to navigate, with clear upper and lower case and nicely emphasized bold bits here and there. Tynion’s story seems elongated as if it’s being stretched out. There are sequences of large panels that take several pages that could easily have been compressed. While it’s enlightening to have the room to breathe while we learn about the plot and characters in the first issue, this one runs a bit loose. Let’s stay with it though, and see what issue two brings!

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
