Maria Llovet, of Heartbeat and Faithless (with Brian Azzarello), has a new title before us. From BOOM! Studios, Luna is a sensuous story, mystical and mysterious.

Issue 1 introduces us to Theresa, a young woman who has had an accident, bleeding from her forehead and seeing visions. But she is helped back to health in the middle of the woods at the commune of the Family of the Sun. This ‘family’ appears to be the ‘typical hippie cult’ from the 60s. Many Flower girls, and a guy at the centre, with charismatic charm. There’s contentment, loads of guitar playing, and home spun happiness.
Until Teresa gets deeper involved, and sees behind the tie-dye curtain, to the secrets beyond and within.
This is really quite a strong book; Llovet’s drawings are carefully rendered but not too detailed, keeping their organic hand-drawn look. The dialogue, the spinning of the tale, the emotional connections and associations, the dreaminess and timelessness, all work their magic. The 60s mood, the flowers, the tangled web, all beautifully realized and coloured with care. We suspend time, we suspend disbelief, we float weightless and wait for the unfolding of the clothes, the love divine, the charms to uphold, and our breath to be the centre, the centre of this universe. It’s spellbinding and recommended.
