A new mini-series from Dark Horse delves into the ‘whatever happened to” saga of a one-time costumed vigilante. Cloaked #1 is a fascinating glimpse into what happens when a wealthy man hires a private eye to track down the missing hero twenty-five years later.

Mike Richardson (founder of Dark Horse, writer of various Star Wars, Alien and other licensed property comics, etc) keeps the story concise and concealed; not much is revealed but we are definitely paying attention. With whispers and echoes of someone similar to “Batman”, the masked hero rips around town in a souped-up coupe of a car, jumping headlong into dens of thieves, kicking butt, and throwing hooks. And then abruptly disappears, both he and his sidekick.

Artist Jordi Armengol turns in a dark and spooky illustrative style, located somewhere between photorealism and 3D computer figure art. It’s unsettling because the facial expressions are a bit frozen and disturbing. The shadows are dense, the viewing angles are intense, and it all works in a darkly dark voodoo of art. Colour is also by Armengol, and lettering by Nate Piekos.

It’s a tightly written comic noir, and well worth picking up! Note, this comic was previously to be named The Icon, and the title was recently changed to Cloaked, FYI.

Dark Horse, Cloaked #1, $3.99 for 28 pages of content.

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
