Shobo Coker (writer) and Shof Coker (artist) combine forces in Image Comics’ New Masters #2.

There is a lot going on in this sci-fi story, especially for the first-time reader: Ola’s family wants her to emigrate to Jupiter, but then Sulesh and Persio are summoned to appear before Dr. Gideon Ojumah. Meanwhile, Ola herself has landed in hot water, doing some bartering. It’s time for battle!

It’s a densely packed tale, well-illustrated, with Shof’s figures and worldbuilding (colour assist by Julmae Kristoffer) a fascinating vision indeed. But prepared to hunker down, study the dialogue, get to know the cast, and pay attention. This is a full-on delve into unfamiliar territory. Take notes!

In addition to the main story, there are four extra pages that expand the Coker brothers’ ideas of the new world they are creating: its origins in Nigerian sights and sounds, and some ‘history’ of the future.

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
