Asaf Hanuka, New York Times bestselling cartoonist, brings his clean line and ever-present musings to print with The Realist: Last Day on Earth, from the Archaia imprint of BOOM! Studios.
Hanuka’s thoughts wander from examinations of his Jewish roots in the Middle East to politics to ever-present anxieties, and a deep sense of introspection. It all plays well together under the Realist ‘umbrella’, that is if you discount the ‘realist’ angle: This material would be better described as surreal! It’s full of falling bombs, imagined conversations, journeys in time where he meets his (mostly) younger self.
The drawings by turn are exquisite. Hanuka’s carefully rendered people, with their apt and rapt expressions, his gift for exaggeration, his ability to observe and revamp little details for us to enjoy.
The book is a collection of his weekly full-colour autobiographical comics, mixing pathos, humour, whimsy, and dark dark thoughts. Memorable reading.
