Left with nothing but his wits, Batman has no time for rest as Failsafe has finally found him and aims to eliminate him once and for all. Everything boils down to this in the finale of the Failsafe arc!
It’s kind of frustrating in some ways to write about this series, because how can I emphasize how cleverly written it is? Zdarsky throws some curveballs that continue to swerve expectations in more ways than one. From the use of a particular piece of the outfit that’s often ridiculed to the survival tactics that are used to endure the attacks of Failsafe, Zdarsky manages to keep the quality up with this title as Batman attempts to counter Failsafe’s plans. What makes this book so enjoyable compared to previous runs, despite all of the fictionally impossible feats that the character often achieves, there is a sense of belief, by suspending belief due to the stakes in place. Zdarsky has a way of writing Batman into situations that actually convinces the reader that he might not come out on top. He is not Bat-God, he is Batman, a man dressed as a bat placed in insurmountable situations that are only triumphed by the skin of his teeth.
The best part of this issue is the relationship Bruce has with Tim as a father/son duo that is still unique compared to the relationships with Grayson, Jason, and Damian. Tim has always been the best Robin, and his ability to work with Bruce in tandem shines in this issue. While the main story is a blockbuster action piece, the backup story, I AM GUN is a psychologically, emotionally satisfying psychological analysis on the Batman of Zen-En-Arrh. It will have many readers and fan pages buzzing as to how Failsafe and Batman’s whole war against crime led him to the current.
What shines more than Tim Drake’s abilities is the artwork of Jorge Jimenez, who crushed it by delivering the most kinetically dynamic artwork on a mainstream superhero title. His panel and page layouts, coupled with Tomeu Morey’s colors and Clayton Cowles’s subtle yet effective lettering accelerates this book even further. Additionally, Leonardo Romero and Jordie Bellaire deliver fantastic art for the conclusion of the backup story. It’s a fast-paced book with a ton of thrills and truly lives up to all the hype that it’s been given thus far, and is a satisfying conclusion to the Failsafe arc. Add this to your pull list for new comic book day.
