Typically speaking, I don’t like stories that take place between two stories we already know. To me, they feel like filler and knowing how everything turns out normally takes away the suspense. Brian Wood’s Star Wars for Dark Horse is a pleasant exception to that rule. In the new Star Wars series, the story takes place between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back. It is difficult to say what writer Brian Wood will do when his book catches up to Empire but I am excited for the ride!
Issue #9 tells the story of what happens when Leah meets the weapon designer behind the laser that destroyed her home planet, more action with Luke and Wedge’s secret mission, and Han Solo going toe-to-toe with Boba Fett (sort of)! It is a quick read because of all of the exciting things that are happening.
This series has revitalized my love for the Star Wars Expanded Universe. Month by month this book surprises me with exciting stories and incredible art of Carlos D’Anda. The Alex Ross covers certainly don’t hurt the book either! Over all the story has been compelling and I am sad to read that Brian Wood will be done with the book after issues #20. On the flip side, I am excited to see who Dark Horse brings on to take us even deeper into the Galaxy Far Far Away!
Overall, I give Star Wars #9 (R)5 out of (D)5 stars!
