“ Welcome Batman, to the top of the world.”
Even after his time on Batman, Scott Snyder proved with his Two-Face centered story “My Own Worse Enemy” arc with John Romita Jr that he still has more juice in the tank. This time around Snyder introduces his own take on Mr. Freeze with illustrative assistance of Jock. Batman is traveling in a terrible snowstorm armed with a thermal heat suit, facing off against a horrific horde of undead slender ice men. What does Mr. Freeze plan to do with the cryogenic bomb that he’s salvaged? Will Batman be able to prevent the nuclear winter that Mr. Freeze is dishing out or will fall in the cold embrace of death?
Thoughts: What is great about this issue aside from its narrative is that there is an aesthetic with Jock’s artwork and Steve Wands letters that have a Neil Gaiman Sandman kind of feel to it, which is cool when you know that Snyder’s All Star Batman series is in a sense anthology series. Snyder and Jock’s approach to how Mr. Freeze looks visually is eerily, hauntingly stunning. Jocks handle on Mr. Freeze reminds me a bit of how he kinda looked in Batman Beyond in terms of how creepy he looked. series of anthology tales aside from being its own continuation that Snyder has developed since the New 52. Snyder’s take on MR Freeze gives off intimidating vibes which is cool (no pun intended) especially when Jocks able to show Freeze and Batman go hand to hand in combat. It’s not often that readers have seen Freeze fight with his hands beyond using his freeze gun is something rarely seen in most Batman comics. The colors are splendid and definitely delivers in giving a very brash, and painful blizzard feeling of unforgiving frozen weather. There is also a backup feature as well. If you’ve been enjoying Snyder’s work on Batman, or looking for a story to jump right into. Then I think it’s a recommended pick up.
