WIth Giant Days, Volume 8 from BOOM, we reenter the college apartment days of the characters.

The Giant Days series is written by John Allison, with illustrations by Max Sarin on pencils, Liz Fleming on inks, and Whitney Cogar on colours. There is a big team behind this monthly book, which won an Eisner Award in 2016.

It’s set in the University of Sheffield, England, and deals with everyday life with a bunch of students; their love dramas, roommate issues, landlord problems, and some touchier topics, such as sleazy professors.

The tone of the dialogue is witty, much like a quickly paced sitcom. It’s ‘set up the joke and deliver it’ style. This can get a little wearing in reading a volume as large as this one, collecting issues 29-32. However, the combination of witty banter with the fluid pencils of Max Sarin works here. The figures bend and twist, showing emotion, strutting their stuff like a gang on the theatre stage. The colouring is also excellent. It’s wonderful to read and enjoy.

In addition to the ups and downs of the cast of characters, this collected volume also includes a cover gallery and sketch gallery.

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
