More continuing adult drama among the animals in Unnatural #3 from Image.
This comic is a visually stunning adventure into the world where animals run the place. They drive, live like humans and have babies. But the government is strictly enforcing the ‘stay with your own kind’ rules: if you date or sleep with another animal species, you’re up the creek big time.
Leslie, our blue pig main character, has finally agreed to go on a special prearranged date. Just to make peace with the authorities. Despite her dream episodes that feature a gorgeous male of another species. And her memories of her mother, who carried on outside the rules.
The date is a strange one, and it goes horribly wrong. Meanwhile, her friend Trish is looking deeper into places she should be staying away from.
Mirka Andolfo’s work in this comic is superb. The scenes, the plot, the concept, and dialogue are all solid, even when translated into English from their original language. The artwork is fluidly conceived, the figures moving effortlessly through space, their expressions and body language languid and serene. The colouring is some of the best I have seen this year.
It’s adult, it’s mature, but above all, it’s readable and fascinating.
