With issue four, Smooth Criminals from BOOM continues the tale of a jewel thief and her hacker friend. They are in cahoots, planning a big heist. Obviously, though, this is not a stroll in the park. Plus, Mia has traveled in time from the 1960s!

Writers Kurt Lustgarten and Kirsten ‘Kiwi’ Smith usher us along. The dialogue and scenes are ‘bang on’. Brenda and Mia are in the planning stages for their jewel heist. But there are complications. The pressure is getting to them. There are moments when the past threatens to derail the present. Oh, it’s so mysterious, isn’t it?? As a reviewer, I want to keep the story cryptic, but encourage you to delve into this series:

Leisha Riddel (art) and Brittany Peer (colour) are doing wonderful work on the visuals in Smooth Criminals. Riddel has a knack for showing expressions. The body language in the heist rehearsal scenes with Brenda and Mia is really nicely handled. Natural and fluid gestures, and Riddel gives us intuitive points of view for viewing the characters.

Fun and intriguing; I’m looking forward to seeing the next issue!

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
