Now, most of us comic heads know that the Fatal Five are villains from the Legion of Superheroes rouges gallery. So when this animated feature film was announced many scratched their heads with confusion. The question of “HOW?” is answered within the first few minutes when three members of the Fatal Five attack the Legion of Superheroes headquarters to steal a time travel device. When Mano, Tharok, and Persuader activate the device Star Boy leaps to interfere and is taken on a ride to the 21st century. Star Boy realizes what is about to happen and activates a booby trap on the machine that traps the three into stasis during the trip. Star Boy lands in Gotham and the time pod lands in Metropolis.

Star Boy has a need for a mental stabilizing agent and when he realizes that it was damaged in transit and he must seek more. During a misunderstanding with a clerk, he has a run-in with Batman and is taken into custody in Arkham. Meanwhile, Superman catches the time pod before it hurts some innocents and brings it to Mr. Terrific to study.

We are then introduced to the newest Green Lantern of Sector 2814, Jessica Cruz. Jessica (like in the comics) struggles with her fear. She questions why the ring chose her for this duty and even mentions that her new job “chose” her she did not choose it. Wonder Woman shows up trying to get Jessica into the game and a brief sparring session takes place. We then shift back to Gotham where Batman and his Justice League trainee Miss Martian are trying to diffuse a situation at a news station. In Metropolis, Superman and Mr. Terrific make a breakthrough on the time pod and when Mano, Tharok, and the Persuader escape the pod a fight ensues. All is well until the Persuaders ax cuts Superman then the villains escape.

In Arkham, Star Boy sees the battle on TV and he snaps out of his fog and breaks out. Batman who happens to be there tries to recapture him. When they catch up with Star Boy, Batman has Miss Martian go into his mind to find out who these villains are that got the best of the Man of Steel. A small back to the future moment happens where the Leaguers who are present see a glimpse of the future. Jessica even makes a funny reference of the Back to the Future movie. While in Star Boy’s mind they find out what the bad guys want. They are searching for Validus and the Emerald Empress and they need Jessica Cruz to do so.

To find out the fate of the Fatal Five and if the Justice League stopped them you are going to have to buy the DVD or if you are a subscriber to the DC Universe App you can catch it there as well. Seeing this movie in the old Justice League animation format was a nice nod to the old days. Hearing the original voice actors reprise their roles made this all the more fantastic!! Even Bruce Timm voices a famous member of the Rogues Gallery.

The Special Feature for this Bluray consists of

  • Sneak Peak of Batman: Hush- This is the next featured length animated movie coming soon.  Taking Jim Lee and Jeph Loeb’s epic story arc to the next level. This was a pretty impressive tease to get you ready for what’s to come.
  • Battling the Invisible Menace-This explores the nuanced hero as many characters must deal with the everyday feelings of anxiety, depression, and other incapacitating emotions that we all must battle and overcome. Which is what Jessica Cruz deals with every day.
  • Justice League vs The Fatal Five: Unity of Hero- A look at how the DC heroes have never been more diverse and inclusive, as writers and artists break boundaries and smash stereotypes.
  • Audio Commentary with Bruce Timm
  • Some Bonus Cartoons from the DC Vault
  • A few revisits to Justice League Dark and Justice League vs The Teen Titans

This movie was a fun ride. Not one I would call the best but one that was definitely enjoyable. JQ gives this film a 6.5 out of 10.
