To read Ascender, just start at the beginning. Okay, it’s issue 2, so just start there. Not much preamble needed.

This Image miniseries (five issues) is written by Jeff Lemire and illustrated by Dustin Nguyen. And it’s a pleasure to read. Lemire has constructed a land where a young person, Mila, lives with her father. They are off the grid, off the map, and trying to stay away from the vamp witch named Mother. However, their underground life comes screeching to a halt in this issue, when Mother’s foot soldiers detect their presence. It’s all bad news, and we wonder how things will go for our heroes!

Clearly defined scenes, sympathetic characters, nicely rendered situations where we can instantly: imagine, identify with, and admire.

Suspense, adventure, mystery, sci-fi, horror. All of it.

I admire the clarity and imagination that the creators are showing with this title, and hope you will give Ascender a try!

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
