Ken Garing, the writer/artist of Planetoid, gives us a tour-de-force creative performance with his new title, Gogor, from Image.
In the first issue, Garing introduces us to the Gogor universe: a young student named Armano is on the run. Well, actually, he is seated on the back of Mesmer, his Giant shrew! It’s a madcap chase scene right off the bat for the pair, with soldiers mounted on ants in quick pursuit. Soon, it becomes obvious that Armano is in possession of something very valuable, and some powerful forces are out to retrieve it from him! Enter: the giant Gogor!!
Garing’s storytelling is strong here. The characters are eccentric enough but also painted in broad, obviously theatrical strokes. The drawings are clear and well defined too. Garing’s style sometimes reminds me of veteran comic artist Richard Corben; big shapes, dramatically put into conflict with each other. Graphically iconic, and on the move, every frame and panel carefully curated and staged.
If you like fantasy with a quick moving story, this one will appeal to you! Created, written, drawn, coloured and lettered by Ken Garing.
