If you haven’t been following Criminal in the latest story arc, (Cruel Summer) part seven will likely puzzle you.
But here’s the basics: This Image comic, Criminal, is about criminals. It’s time for the heist. The big payoff. Finally, a chance to make some serious coin. Or at least ‘take’ some coin. But something’s wrong, the atmosphere is all wrong, and things are going to screw up.
Ed Brubaker’s continuing story brings us more of what we like; bad guys making poor choices. These are not the multi-millionaire bad guys who winter in the Caribbean. These are the Teeg Lawlesses and the Rickys and Phils. Who have had their fill of bad days and bad strip joint steaks. Time for the big haul.
Sean Phillips is constantly solid on art and Jacobs Phillips’ colours are spot on. It’s not flashy, it’s not stainless steel realism. There are no lightning or cloud effects here folks, just good old fashioned storytelling. Words and pitchers. You got it? You gotta check out this series. By the way, the first issue of Criminal is now available to read for free on the Image website. Just be sure you’re over 18, or they don’t let you in. Know what I’m sayin’?
Next issue: conclusion.
Image Criminal #11, $3.99 for 26 pages of comic plus a short story. Mature Readers
