Steve Niles and Gyula Németh bring us another Criminal Macabre storyline in issue 1 of The Big Bleed, from Dark Horse.

Niles, the creator of Criminal Macabre a few decades ago, is at it again; his banged-up character Cal McDonald, and Cal’s dead (yes) colleague Mo’Lock are up for venturing into no man’s land… places where you wouldn’t well, get caught dead in. And they kick a few butts here and there.

Home base for the two ruffians is a run down one story. Crooked mini blinds, peeling paint. You know the type. But there are vampires about, lurking in the enclaves, perhaps impersonating clients. Oh Oh.

It makes for fascinating reading. “My client is a vampire and I myself am constantly in trouble.”

Németh, from Budapest Hungary, has a long history in graphic design and illustration. Németh puts the ‘oomph’ into scenes, shapes the action and drama for highest impact, and colours the heck out of the surroundings.

This is a nicely paced first issue with some well-composed background material included after the comic panels end.

Dark Horse Criminal Macabre The Big Bleed Out #1, $3.99 for 22 pages of content. Assume Mature readers

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
