Superman: Man of Tomorrow opens with a young Clark watching a scary alien film and realizing he is one of those aliens and is different from others. Fast forward to Clark as a young intern in Metropolis trying to make a name for himself and still covering up his secret. The film feels a bit like an origin story except it touches on other aspects of Superman’s life including his ability to absorb sunlight for power and the evolution of his costume from a helmet and goggles to his signature red cape. As he is seen more and more he draws attention from several directions including Lobo who confirms there’s a bounty on Clark bringing the two of them to blows. This leads to another origin story Parasite as well as touches on Martian Manhunter’s involvement as well. Aliens are showing themselves both good and bad.
This is a mix of origins, and good versus evil. Although the retelling of Superman’s origin is getting played out the homage they pay to some of the old lines such as more powerful than a locomotive was a nice tribute to the creators. I see how they are trying to bring Superman into today’s stories. It’s a touch of New 52, reboot combo mixed in with origins throw in a galactic bounty hunter and a brilliant Lex Luthor and you have a modern-day superman twist.
Overall this wasn’t the worst thing I have even seen but as I said the origin is played out and enough of Lex. The saving grace is Lobo, and Parasite without these characters this could have been a mess.
Superman: Man of Tomorrow is out now. Grab it for a fun watch and Enjoy a little movie time.
