“If you’ve never read THE INCAL, here’s a word of caution,” said Humanoids Publisher Mark Waid. “This book is unlike anything you’ve ever read before, and you’ll very likely never experience anything like it again. It’s mind-blowing, jaw-dropping, absolutely insane storytelling by two masters of the medium that will challenge your preconception of what comics can do. With THE INCAL, Alejandro Jodorowsky & Mœbius created one of the essential graphic novels. It’s as fresh, weird, and transgressive today as it was 40 years ago when it was first published.” For Humanoids’ Free Comic Book Day comic this year, Waid wrote a brand-new Incal tale illustrated by Stéphane Roux (Star Wars, Birds of Prey) that serves as a perfect introduction to the series.
In this iconic story by Jodorowsky and Mœbius, John DiFool, a low-class detective in a degenerate, dystopian world, finds his life turned upside down when he discovers an ancient, mystical artifact called “the Incal.” DiFool’s adventures will bring him into conflict with the galaxy’s greatest warrior, the Metabaron, and will pit him against the awesome powers of the Technopope. These encounters and many more make up a tale of comic and cosmic proportions that has DiFool fighting for not only his very survival, but also the survival of the entire universe.
THE INCAL is widely regarded as one of the great achievements of the comics medium:
“Legendary…. Whether you’re an established fan of this iconic book that would go on to influence sci-fi like Blade Runner and Akira, or someone who’s never had the chance to pick it up before, this month’s 40th-anniversary publication from Humanoids offers a perfect chance to experience this masterpiece.”—ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY
“It’s one of the great comics team-ups.”—Rolling Stone
“Glorious.”—Boing Boing
“One of the single most important works in the entire medium, transcending panel borders to influence film and TV creators like George Lucas, Ridley Scott, and many more…. It’s Jodorowsky and Moebius, two creators who have never shied away from big ideas, playing with the biggest ideas of their career.”—SYFY WIRE
“THE INCAL is entrancing…It crackles with invention: if you like your sci-fi, you’ll love this.” —The Guardian
This fall, Humanoids will continue its celebration of THE INCAL with the publication of THE SEVEN LIVES OF ALEJANDRO JODOROWSKY, edited by Vincent Bernière. This all-new hardcover appreciation of Jodorowsky provides a definitive overview of his many creative ventures, including his films, his comics writing, his life in the theater, his rebirth as a ‘70s cinematic cult figure, and his legendary work on the unfinished film adaptation of Dune. The book will be available in bookstores on October 13th, 2020 and in bookstores on October 14, 2020.
