Scarenthood #1, delivers parental care and scares. From IDW. Parental discretion is advised!

Well, it’s English, and a married guy is looking after his daughter. He’s a busy man, and his wife is away. Or something. He refers to her about 6 or 7 times during the comic, but never really reveals what the deal is. Working remote? Skitter-skatter, crash, and clatter. There is a lot of chaos.

Nick Roche, the comic’s creator is a busy man himself. Nick writes AND draws this issue. Which, trust me, is a LOT of work.

The dialogue is witty, very English, and spot-on. The kids are sweet, the adults sarcastic. Brilliant. Cormac, new in town, is the dad. The parental “coffee klatch” that Cormac finds himself a member of, all know each other. You see, the playschool that looks after their kids has some evil back history. According to Flynno at least. But Flynno seems to be exaggerating things. Yet as Cormac starts to climb around, digging, investigating, things become truly dark and scary. The presence of evil knows no bounds!

It’s a wonderful tale, unfolding well as we go along. Despite the exasperating ‘carrot and string’ about Cormac’s missing wife, the rest of it holds up beautifully. The witty dialogue, the cringe-worthy happenings, the stressful scenes of horror, all well-orchestrated. Chris O’Halloran contributes carefully chosen colours that fit the scene, ramp up the scares, and normalizes the banality of evil.

Well worth a look at issue 1!

IDW, Scarenthood #1, $3.99 for 29 pages of content. Rated Mature, but my impression is 13+

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
