The cover is dark, with a dark grey skull coming out of a case. Fear Case #1 is open for business and ready for your fear. It’s from Dark Horse.
Matt Kindt (Ether, Mind MGMT) writes this new, horrific detective series. It’s all about a legend: Whoever receives the Fear Case, (a physical box/case), must deliver it along to a designated person within 3 days of suffer deadly consequences! As a “Cold Case”, this unsolved mystery torments the countless Secret Service investigators who have tried to solve it, haunting them after their detective careers, into retirement, and further.
Wow, great concept and well written and captivatingly told here. Kindt’s script is spellbinding, (to borrow a word from old spy movie posters). and artist Tyler Jenkins (colour by Hilary Jenkins) handles the art chores with a dark, scratchy style. Plenty of dark shadows, shadowy faces, black masses of shapes, smudgy details, an atmospheric smog that lends a spookiness to the visuals. The facial features range from buggy-eyed to staring, and mesmerizing.
It’s not high realism here with gleaming textures. It’s more of a typewritten look at dread and the nearly dead; the inevitable sense that things are wrong, we are alone and spooked, looking for a way to the normal world that has left us behind. The colours enhance the mood, earthy, blue, with a hint of sunshine, until, well, the blood starts showing up.
Buy this spooky tale, don’t leave it behind at the local comic store; someone else will surely buy it three days later!!!
