From Scout Comics, Glarien #1 delves into the long long long life of Glarien, the ‘most dangerous elf to be found in the nine realms’. It’s a one-shot, but it’s got a lot!
Writer Charlie Stickney returns to his White Ash series and explores the history of Glarien. It’s sword and sorcery, with perhaps equal weight given to each.
The front cover art by Romina Moranelli is a masterclass in simplicity and grace of line and tone.
Moranelli returns to illustrate the first of three tales inside. The work of this Salerno, Italy artist is worth the price of the book alone, as she moves the action gracefully from panel to panel. The figure work, composition, and colouring are amazing.
The second story brings us forward in years to the ancestral territory later known as White Ash, but in 1220. Artist Yishan Li has a more restrained method of representation but keeps Stickney’s forest-love tale full of passion and subtlety.
The third story is in 1872, with the advance of the railroad through Pennsylvania. Artist Conor Hughes with colourist Fin Cramb illuminate the struggles of railroad workers and barons, conflicting passions, and erupting violence. The linework is astonishing, the figures and facial features effective and attractive. The colouring brings out the dust, the blood, and the shadows just fine, thank you!!
