The title says a lot, and Project Big Hype is a thing! And what a massively large and ambitious project it is; an anthology running over 300 pages, wowee.

Project Big Hype is a 300-page collection of stories, ranging from shorts to longer pieces. Think Shonen Jump for western audiences. It “…blends the biggest indie comics creators with the freshest manga creators”. Established creators with 20-page stories. Newer talent with 5-10 page short stories. The establish creators bring awareness to the product, allowing the newer talent to get a start and win over new fans!

The end result is a lot of fun. I was fortunate to see an advance review copy. Although there are so many writers and artists, (too many to mention in this brief review), the quality level and range of styles is a really good one. The stories run from mech (Mechanical) creatures to manga-influenced, to strongly written and rendered young adult adventures. The stories hold together, the panels exhibit good flow. There are also drawings OF some of the creators, placed between stories, and those are a treat too.

You can sense the enthusiasm, the keen imagination, the energy coursing through Project Big Hype… the panels are filled with dynamic action, the contrasts of style are invigorating, the concepts are many-varied in terms of where they lead the reader. It’s a project that is curated and collected with care.

It’s all teen rated, printed in black and white with halftone, in a Manga sized (5″ x 7’5″) book. Do yourself a favour and check out the Kickstarter, where the book is being made available in print for $25, and digital copies are $15! But don’t wait too long; the print run will be small, ensuring that the copies will be hard to find after release date!

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
