“You will travel far, my little Kal-El. But we will never leave you… even in the face of our deaths… the richness of our lives shall be yours. All that I have, all that I’ve learned, everything I feel… all this, and more I… I bequeath you, my son.”

The Back Story: In 1978 the world was introduced to Richard Donner’s vision of Superman: The Movie. The movie’s title character was played by Christopher Reeves, and a star-studded cast including Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, and Margo Kidder. The film saw success at the box office and shot both Donner and Reeves to international fame. Although Donner’s shot the majority of its sequel he was removed from it due to a difficult relationship with the executive producers. Donner also had a comic book career for a short time collaborating with his former assistant Geoff Johns, and artist Adan Kubert. Stories like The Last Son, and Escape from Bizzaro World and again for issue 1000 of Action Comic.

What’s in the Box: Mezco released their version of  1978 Superman. Included in the box are three head portraits,  nine interchangeable hands including hands to hold the kryptonite shard, three kryptonite shards, kryptonite fragment, kryptonite pendant with real chain, and fortress of solitude base with light-up features. Also included is the movie logo base and adjustable post for flying effects.

The Verdict: Growing up on The Donner film this was when I discovered my fandom for DC and the world of Superman. I can tout all day on this figure’s greatness and much-needed release. Bringing my childhood back to life was a great lift in an otherwise dreary past year. The costume is spot on to the original film and the likeness to Reeves is uncanny. The plethora of accessories including the Fortress light-up base which the keys all fit into was an added bonus to an already great figure. I may be biased because of my love for classic film but this is a much-needed figure to add to the collection. Even the tin the figure is shipped in is well done. Do not sleep on this one if you’re a fan. He will not last on the market. Once again Mezco topped themselves.
