It’s outer space, spaced apart from inner space.
Two brothers, Marc Michaud and Daniel Michaud write and illustrate complementary tales in a combined volume entitled HOME. This graphic novel consists of two long-form stories, and is a New Friday publication, an imprint of Lev Gleason Publishing.
“29”, an 86 page black and white story by Marc Michaud, gives us the adventure of Patrick Thoreau, inheriting the captain’s position on the Arc29. Along for the ride is Cyril, a robot. Aboard ship, Patrick and Cyril are alerted to the arrival of the Galactic Police who are arriving momentarily, without prior notice. First time ever! Meanwhile, Orlando, the current captain, seems to have some secrets squirrelled away, and is acting suspiciously. It all has an ominous foreboding to it!
Marc’s script is an elaborate one, documenting many shared moments between Patrick and Cyril, showing us the ups and downs of living on a space station. Tensions mount, loneliness and boredom can become challenging. The only solution is to make any place your home, and to form bonds that help you survive!
Demeter, written and illustrated in black and white by Daniel Michaud, is centred on human pioneers of a new land. Religious symbols, passion and the interrelationship between humans and their environment are highlights of this story of approximately 20 pages. Daniel’s renderings have weight and tone, gravity and gravitas.
Both stories bring up interesting themes, the contrast between dreams and reality, the incredible work ethic that is required to start a new life in a new environment, and how we must rely on those we can trust in order to survive. Volume 2 launches soon!
