The Six Sidekicks of Trigger Keaton, from Image, begins this month. I think you’d get a Kick out of this one, as much as I did!

It’s written by Kyle Starks and is the story of a thoroughly hated TV action star. His name is Trigger Keaton. He’s had several sidekicks, all who have fallen out of favour for various reasons. But now, Trigger has been found dead! Who killed him??

While there is a bit of a backstory and a minimal ‘infodump’ to get through in reading this one, it’s well worth it. The outrageous Trigger Keaton makes enemies of everyone he meets. His sidekicks are treated brutally. But there is a charm to the proceedings, and I can’t fully explain why. But I’ll try.

The artwork (Chris Schweizer with colouring assist from Liz Trice Schweizer) is funky and free-flowing. It’s line work with wonderful consistency of line weight and a wacky ‘larger than life’ quality. This works perfectly for the subject matter. The exaggerated and caricatured faces, the carefully applied (mostly) flat colour, the ‘no subtlety action sequences, the impeccable storyboarding all combine with a murder mystery premise, to make this book so much fun that you want more right away!

Also includes pinup, and parody 70s special offers and articles. Can’t wait for the next issue!

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
