Well, it might very well be a Nice House On The Lake, alright, but issue 2 from DC Comics doesn’t linger on the amenities.

It’s horror straight away, twisting and frothing by the pool. Hey, it’s scary stuff, some of the best of the summer.

The world is burning, getting destroyed. Only the lucky (so far) few that have been invited to stay at Walter’s lake house are likely to survive. And woe to those who attempt to leave. So, it’s kinda horrifying to think that this idyllic spot may be where you get to spend the rest of your days. No family, no pets, but plenty of cigarettes and a few regrets. Fully stocked and stoked with creepiness.

The second issue of this Black Label title (17+) starts to dig into Walter’s back story, and how it relates to the Lake House situation. We aren’t spoon-fed the entire surrounding issues, but we get glimpses behind the curtain. And those are shocking and disturbing.

It’s an excellent and unsettling read; Gen Z and Millenials locked in isolation in ideal surroundings. Writer James Tynion IV tells his story using comic art panel sequences, mixed with text transcripts of House Logs, plus images from surveillance cameras within the home. Man, this is top-level stuff, illustrated in a highly realistic style by Alvaro Martinez Bueno, coloured by Jordie Bellaire, and lettered by AndWorld Design.

DC, The Nice House On The Lake #2, $3.99 for 29 pages of content. 17+

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
