The comic book mini-series Yasmeen has been released as a collected trade volume by Scout and Simon & Shuster.

The story centres around a 16-year-old, settling with her family in the US. Through flashbacks, we learn of her life in her native Iraq, where she was kidnapped and enslaved by the ISIS terrorist regime. Her stirring bid for freedom and her struggles to adapt to a life in North America are the basis of this effectively told tale.

Writer Saif A. Ahmed puts us in harm’s way, brings the foreign conflict close to home, and deciphers for us this very gripping story of Yasmeen and her family. The illustrations by Fabiano Mascolo are clean line, deceptively simple-looking graphics that belie their sophistication. There is a lot here to enjoy, and the drama is as real as fiction can get. Lettering by Robin Jones.

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
