Cliff Chiang writes, draws, colours, and letters the second issue of DC Comics’ Catwoman Lonely City.

In it, Selina Kyle has returned to a different Gotham City than the one she left 10 years ago. Now released from prison, she wants to break into the late Bruce Wayne’s Batcave. Well, we wonder about that. Why is she doing this? If I learned why, I’ve forgotten.

Issue two, however, while it leads the reader toward the Batcave, spends a lot of time in assembling a gang for Selina. And that’s where this shaggy tale wags the dog. It’s the ups and downs of her former associates, her chats with friends over coffee, and her training. It’s meant to be whimsical and amusing, this series of episodes of encounters of the criminals and their peccadillos, but by the third time around, it gets to be tiring. It’s time to put all the Lifestyles stuff away and get doing something. And sure enough, there is a bit of action here and there, and a bunch of screwups.

We readers will enjoy bits and pieces of the comings and goings, but really, this beautifully drawn, coloured and edited story could have easily been edited down, streamlined, and given a couple heaping helpings of urgency and suspense.

DC Comics, Catwoman Lonely City, $6.99 for 48 pages.

After a career of graphic design, art direction and copywriting, I still have a passion for words and pictures. I love it when a comic book comes together; the story is tight, and the drawings lead me forward. Art with words... the toughest storytelling technique to get right. Was this comic book worth your money? Let's see!!
