Jim Mahfood’s Grrl Scouts (Stone Ghost) title is back again with issue 2, from Image.
It is an amazing adventure, and as Mahfood himself mentions in an afterword, “it’s a step up from issue 1 in all the right ways.”
Our Grrl Scout Dio, her companion Gordi and her newly hired tough guy Turtleneck Jones end up in the ‘outer sector’, where things go really wrong really fast. Meanwhile, Dio is sought by a mysterious energy force, The Teeth. Oh, it’s Dr. Strange-tinged with satire and sadness and over the top-ness like you wouldn’t believe. The storyline may be a jagged little pill, a raggedy-ann adventure of yellow brick roadrage, but this comic is amazing.
The sheer inventive frantic energy and exuberance in Stone Ghost makes us blink and forgive any confusing interruptions in our smooth reading. The story rocks, the drawings are scratchy, raspy and ridonkulous, and for that, this title is worth the pleasure of purchasing.
Mahfood steps out on the proverbial limb with this one, pushing the boundaries of story narrative, character rudeness, impulsive lane-changing and the sound of one hand scratching our heads while we chuckle at the sheer verve and virality of Grrl Scouts.
Issue two contains the aforementioned afterword, and a Macho Tailfin short comic story too.
Image Comics, Grrl Scouts Stone Ghost #2, $3.99 for 34 pages of comic content. Mature and majorly new.
